Qatar Petroleum has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Samsung C&T Corporation for the expansion of the LNG storage and loading facilities for its North Field East Project (NFE), which is the world’s largest LNG project.

Under the terms of the contract, which is worth KRW 1,856.4 billion (€1.37 billion), Samsung C&T will build three 187,000 m3 LNG tanks and three LNG loading berths and all associated pipes, lines and loading lines. The construction period will last from March 1, 2021 to November 30, 2025.

Qatar Petroleum will invest $28.75 billion (€23.71 billion) in NFE, at Ras Laffan Industrial City in northern Qatar, which will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tpa to 110 million tpa.

As well as LNG, NFE will produce condensate, LPG, ethane, sulphur and helium. Start-up is planned for Q4 2025 and its total production will reach 1.4 million boe/d. Qatar Petroleum announced the final investment decision for NFE in February 2021, and awarded the onshore engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract to CTJV, a joint venture between Chiyoda Corporation and Technip Energies.

The contract also includes options for two LNG tanks and one LNG berth for the North Field South (NFS) project, Qatar Petroleum’s proposed second phase of LNG development. This will include two further 8 million tpa LNG mega trains, taking production capacity to 126 million tpa, and is expected to begin production in 2027. Qatar Petroleum said that the value of the contract, including options, is more than $2 billion (€1.66 billion).
