Two fuel tanks at Repsol’s Puertollano petrochemical plant in Spain caught fire as a result of a lightning strike, it has reported.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which broke out at around 9.45am local time on 10 August. It said: “Around 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at its height, most of them Repsol personnel, with some assistance from the local fire brigade, which praised the efforts of the Repsol staff. The firefighters used eight firefighting vehicles, two high-capacity MIRU pumps and several portable firefighting vehicles. The fire was extinguished at 5.33pm.”
Repsol said that there was no danger to the population at any time. The company said it has an Internal Emergency Plan that was put in place immediately to resolve incidents within the industrial premises. The emergency plan is aimed at guaranteeing the safety of employees, the facilities and the closest environment, ensuring rapid control. The emergency plans were activated as soon as the accident was known and they worked correctly.
Repsol said staff maintained contact with the state authorities and emergency services throughout the incident, and the company thanked them for their collaboration. The company has opened an investigation into the incident.
