Pond’s Houston South office, located in Pasadena, Texas, was recently recognised by the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation, as a recipient of the Lone Star Safety Award. The Lone Star Safety Award Program recognises Texas employers with low rates of work-related injuries and illnesses and exemplary workplace safety programs which can serve as models for other employers.

The program certifies safe employers in Texas who are committed to providing outstanding health and safety protection to their employees. Recipients may also be asked to offer help with safety programs and services for other Texas organizations if requested by the Texas Department of Insurance.

Services may include giving presentations at events or to appropriate industry associations, sharing health programs or mentoring other organizations, serving as a panel member for safety and health issues, or participation in the Texas Workers’ Compensation and Safety Conferences.

Employee safety is an important concern at all Pond locations, and especially so at the Houston South office where project team members regularly conduct surveys and inspections on various pipelines in remote locations to determine the need for corrosion control. Pond Houston South also owns and operates a fleet of eight pickup trucks, each being driven 30,000 to 40,000 miles annually, routinely exposing the occupants to Pond’s most hazardous task-driving.

Among some of the most effective safety procedures implemented by the Houston South office leadership are the implementation of Pond’s safe driving program, project specific health and safety planning, new employee buddy program, daily vehicle inspections, DMV background checks, DOT drug and alcohol screenings and participation in annual employee training.

Pond vehicles used for on-site work are equipped with first aid kits, fire extinguishers, water and GPS systems for tracking. Survey teams are also required to complete client-specific safety training required to work at refineries and chemical plants where pipelines are located.

Before the start of each project, the survey team meets for a pre-project kick off meeting, at which time all known safety concerns are identified and discussed. Team members participating in site visits and inspections are outfitted with required personal protective equipment that typically includes hard hats, high-visibility reflective vests, safety boots, safety glasses and leather gloves.

Pond Director of Health and Safety, Jim Davis said: “Being selected by the State of Texas to receive the Lone Star Safety Award further demonstrates Pond’s commitment to employee Health and Safety and our continual efforts to achieve the overarching goal of preventing all workplace injuries and accidents.”
