In response to industry need, especially in South America, the American Petroleum Institute (API) 653 exam and standard have been translated into Portuguese.

API said expanding the API 653 certification to Portuguese-speaking countries – Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and others – will provide a huge benefit to the regions and to the professionals with proven technical competence and experience in storage tanks inspection.

This programme is designed to certify inspectors of aboveground storage tanks, found commonly at terminals, refineries, biofuels and petrochemical facilities.

The API 653 certification is overseen by API’s Individual Certification Programmes (ICP), which administers all exams and individual certifications for API standards covering midstream and downstream operations.

API standards are recognised and used with confidence worldwide, and ICP plays a key role in enabling the industry to operate efficiently, safely and reliably.

The API 653 certification, specifically, is crucial for ensuring safety and efficacy at oil and natural gas facilities with aboveground storage tanks. Those taking the API exam will have to answer questions covering 12 key areas used to determine the knowledge required for personnel to identify risk and help maintain the mechanical integrity of the tank over its lifespan.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, all exams will be administered with safety considerations meant to ensure public health, including social distancing measures. All those administering and taking the exams will be required to wear a mask.
