EEMUA’s competency-based training course for mechanical integrity practitioners addresses the loss of primary containment of hazardous substances, a major cause of incidents and regulator interventions. The flexible online learning delivery and assessment, and robust certification means that Learners can be either at their work site or home working and gain relevant, industry accepted competence in a safety critical area.
EEMUA’s Mechanical Integrity Practitioner Certificate (MIPC(R)) training course is based on the guidance and good practice contained in EEMUA 177, EEMUA 231, EEMUA 232 and HSE PSSR ACOP.
Induction for this blended learning course takes approximately two hours and is available from 4 September 2023, after registration. Six Learning Cycles run consecutively commencing in October 2023, requiring approximately four hours of time each Learning Week until the Final Assessment is completed in May 2024.
Designed for Practitioners
Developed by EEMUA members from a range of industry sectors, the MIPC training course is primarily aimed at mechanical integrity practitioners working under UK legislation. MIPC learning materials and assessments are aligned to the following competency levels: Engineering Technologist (PAS 525 Professional Engineering Competence Level), Incorporated Engineer (UK-SPEC), and Category 2 (UKAS RG2).
Learners should already be actively engaged in a mechanical integrity role such as Corrosion Engineer, Inspection Engineer, Integrity Engineer/Officer, Mechanical Integrity/Asset Integrity Engineer, Operational Safety Engineer/Craftsperson and Plant Inspector. They should have three to five years experience in this type of position and a relevant qualification.
Over a 27-week period, the MIPC training course will provide a clear view of challenges, trends and opportunities from a mechanical integrity perspective, tailoring the learning to the Learner’s own industry sector and site/s. MIPC has been designed around the Learner experience, including Tutor and Mentor support, and a variety of online learning activities delivered via a corporate quality blended learning platform. Digital and printed copies of EEMUA Publications 177, 231 and 232 are provided as part of the course materials.

- LC1 – Legislative Environment, Written Scheme of Examination (WSE)
- LC2 – Equipment Design Elements, Operational Considerations, Risk and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP)
- LC3 – Asset Condition, User Responsibilities and Competencies
- LC4 – Inspection Process, Inspection and Test Techniques, Inspection Roles
- LC5 – Responses to Findings and Reporting, Postponement, Record keeping
- LC6 – WSE Review, Audit, Feedback, Industry Good Practice
Expectations of Learners
- The Induction. Learning Cycles and Final Assessment will be held solely online. For the best user experience, Learners will need access to a computer with a large screen and a broadband internet connection.
- The Learner will be expected to meet the course’s entry requirements as well as nominate a suitable Mentor and preferably an Observer (both ideally from the Learner’s own organisation) to participate in the course.
- The Learner must abide by the Code of Conduct for the course, including relevant non-disclosure and non-compete commitments.
- The Learner will need to be proficient in English both written and spoken. For students whose first language is not English, a minimum score of 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test is recommended.
- A basic mathematical ability is assumed.
- The Final Assessment will involve online proctoring either via EEMUA Executive staff or an approved online proctoring service.
Learners’ time commitment
A Learner’s approximate time commitment for the course is estimated to be:
- Induction: 2 hours to suit working schedules from September 2023 – adapts the coursework to your site/s needs.
- Learning: 4 hours per week for 27 weeks as below
- Six Learning Cycles, each taking four weeks, and including Live Classes: 102.5 hours
- Portfolio Submission 2.5 hours
- Final Assessment: 3 hours
Approximate Total: 110 hours / 15 days over 27 weeks
Expectations of Mentors

Certification
The EEMUA Mechanical Integrity Practitioner Certificate is valid for five years. EEMUA will provide a pathway for recertification at five year periods after passing the initial course.
