The Port of Rotterdam Authority has completed the construction of a 1,200m long deep-sea quay wall and a 1,000m quay wall for inland vessels. These quays will serve the HES Hartel Tank Terminal development on the Hartelstrook.
HES International is developing the tank terminal for the storage and transhipment of oil products and biofuels on the Hartelstrook, on Maasvlakte 1.
BP – owner of a large refinery in Rotterdam – has already committed itself to the project, including plans for pipeline connections between the refinery and the terminal. A total of 52 tanks with a combined storage capacity of 1.3 million cbm will be constructed in an area of 27 hectares.
“The investment of HES International BV fits in with the trend that major international players see Rotterdam as a strategic location and therefore invest here and concentrate their activities. We are happy with that, because the concentration of activities ensures greater efficiency and therefore a lower footprint. At the same time, this strengthens Rotterdam’s competitive position,” said Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. “This new terminal fits in with our strategy to continue to support and renew the existing sectors in our port during the energy transition, as well as to develop new industry.”
The investments in the terminal and the nautical infrastructure together amount to several hundred million euros. After commissioning, the terminal is to be operational 24/7 and offers work to approximately 100 people.
