China National Offshore Oil Corp’s (CNOOC) has commissioned it’s ninth LNG import terminal in after it received a 93,000-tonne LNG cargo from Qatar at the new Shenzhen facility.

The terminal has four 160,000 m3 storage tanks and a marine jetty capable of accommodating LNG carriers up to the 266,000 cbm. The facility has the capacity to handle up to 4 mta of LNG.

The terminal is the product of China’s growing demand for natural gas as it continues to substitute coal for natural gas. As a result CNOOC has been working to step up construction of its LNG infrastructure facilities in recent years. The company has plans to expand its LNG terminal network, with new facilities in Fujian, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. In May 2018 the energy company announced it is to develop its 10th major import terminal, at Longhai City near Zhangzhou in Fujian province. The 3 mta facility, with three 160,000 cbm storage tanks, is due for completion in late 2021.
